A colorful brick wall has been broken. Each brick it’s own color, laying in pieces on the ground. A man comes and starts picking up each piece, polishing it till his reflection can be seen. He slowly starts rebuilding the wall, but this time with all the colors interwoven together. As the wall continues to be built it becomes evident that a picture is being formed. As I sit and watch the man continue to build, the anticipation arises and then finally it’s done.
The wall, in all its colorful, broken glory is a picture of God. Each broken piece reflects the builder and the whole wall reflects God. People come and walk by but can’t help and stare. Before long people are planting flowers at the base and the surrounding area turns into a garden. The garden continues to draw people in at all moments of the day, someone is standing in the center of this eden admiring this beautiful wall. A picture depicted that no one has ever seen before. The beauty outstanding all other things in life, captures the presence of its admirers and fills them with peace and restoration. A sense of hope that can’t be denied and has to be shared with everyone.
This is a vision I got the other day while I was spending time in prayer. I was so captured by its beauty and rawness, that while I, myself, was staring at the wall, realized that this wall is my squad. Each person (an individual color) is being broken down in Christ at the same time Christ is rebuilding us and mixing all our brokenness together to reflect God himself. Each piece restored to fullness in Him.
We all play a part in the ministry and work of God, but how much more beautiful is it when we come together in unity. Christ is magnified when we don’t stand alone, but stand in oneness with God and other believers.
In this season of quarantine that we’ve been in, it has been incredibly challenging to be united, but it isn’t stopping God. The other night my roommate and I were bummed that we couldn’t be apart of the youth ministry happening (still in quarantine but out soon!), but needed to stay true to our word and headed to our room. As we were getting ready for bed, we could hear one of the guys from our squad (out of quarantine) giving a message to the homeless men that stay the night at our host organization. So Sierra and I decide to stand at the balcony wall and listen down. As we are hearing his testimony and salvation story we hear another member of our squad (also out of quarantine) leading worship for the youth.
In that moment, neither member of our squad knew what was happening, but Sierra and I could see and hear God moving pieces to create unity. As soon as the salvation prayer ended the words sang above them (5 stories up) were the lyrics to “way maker.” The exact words were “you are here now, turning lives around.” It was amazing to see how the words sung on the roof were directly impacting the people on the ground level, without even knowing it. Had it not been for quarantine, we would have never know those two things were happening simultaneously, bringing all the pieces together, creating a wonderful picture of God.
“This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.” - Psalm 91:2
